After a 40 year career, Garis Distelhorst, CAE, Executive Vice President & CEO of the Marble Institute of America and a well-known leader in the association industry, will retire from MIA December 31, 2012. James Hieb, CAE, the association’s Vice President, will become MIA’s Executive Vice President January 1, 2013. Jim Hieb served as the GCSAE Chairman in 2012. Click here for more information.
May 2012: GCSAE held two important meetings for association members. On May 10th Wendy Holiday, VP Marketing & Member Services, and Anne Mendelhall, Director of Marketing Communications (both from the National Association of College Stores) led a discussion about "Growing Annual Meeting Attendence in a Challenging Environment." They challenged the attendees to have a "people strategy" when building a key industry event. On May 22nd, GCSAE held it's second Association CEO Roundtable. This event, hosted by the Northern Ohio Regional Multiple Listing Service (NORMLS), included a session about introducing iPad Apps, as well as a facilitated discussion about hot topics impacting association CEOs today. The CEO roundtable has become an important GCSAE program offering.
April 2012: Three area association executives (Cynthia D’Angelo -- VP Professional Services, National Association of College Stores; Karen Lewis – Executive Director, Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation; and, David Sansone, CAE – Executive Director, Precision Metalforming Association Educational Foundation and Manager, National Tooling and Machining Foundation) led a discussion about association foundations. The attendees came away with information on why you should (or shouldn’t) be considering a related foundation and if so, what it might look like.
November 2011: GCSAE Members Share Best Practices
Twenty-five leaders of the Northeastern Ohio association community and their suppliers met at Precision Metalforming Association headquarters in Independence on Nov. 3 for their annual Best Management Practices information exchange. The program featured peer-to-peer learning on key management topics led by association staff members and key service providers.
This year’s program featured presentations on “Developing iPad Apps,” by Garen Distelhorst, Communications Director of the Marble Institute of America; “E-learning,” by John Headlee, Director of Hosting Operations at Paragrid; “Publications,” by Michael von Glahn, editor of The College Store magazine, official member publication of the National Association of College Stores; and “Training Needs Assessment,” by Bruce Broman, Program Director at the Precision Metalforming Association.
Each presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session concentrating on specific issues and opportunities for those attending.
September 2011: GCSAE thanks Lynn Mangol, CMP, from the International Society of Explosives Engineers for her service to the association as the 2010-11 GCSAE President. Lynn will remain on the board as the immediate past president. The GCSAE membership also thanks John Zajc (formerly of the Society for American Baseball Research) for his service on the board. The following individuals were elected to serve as the 2011-12 leadership team: President - James A. Hieb, CAE, Marble Institute of America; Vice President - Vicky Hawke, Northern Ohio Area Chambers of Commerce; Secretary/Treasurer - Chris Johnson, Thomas Associates; Past President - Lynn L. Mangol, CMP, International Society of Explosives Engineers; Director, Industry Partners - Ellen Kelley, Positively Cleveland; and, Directors-at-Large: Charles Schmidt, National Association of College Stores; Karen Lewis, Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation; and, David C. Sansone, CAE, Precision Metalforming Association Educational Foundation.
May 2011 - Jeffrey Dean, IOM, CAE (International Society of Explosive Engineers) and Mark Laskey (Lutheran Chaplaincy Service) were the panelists for GCSAE's "Copying and Managining as a Small Staff Executive". They shared their experiences, challenges and successes on a variety of topics. All attendees also received a handout with over 50 vital tips -. April 2011 - GCSAE President Lynn Mangol has announced that the GCSAE Annual Meeting will be held at Thistledown Race Track (21501 Emery Road, Cleveland, Ohio) on June 17th. The featured speaker will be Deb Janik, Real Estate & Business Development with the Greater Cleveland Partnership. She will be discussing "New Development Projects in Cleveland."
September 2010--Attend the GCSAE Kickoff Networking Meeting for a fun, informative event while enjoying the view of Cleveland’s skyline with hors d’oeuvres and beverages from the patio at the Edgewater Yacht Club. It will feature guest speaker David Gilbert, President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. more
August 2010 – At the 2010 ASAE Annual Meeting, MIA’s Garen Distelhorst was publicly recognized as a 2010 graduate of ASAE first-ever Leadership Academy--a 2-year program of leadership development for younger members, and he was recognized for his chairmanship of ASAE's Young Association Executives Committee during 2010. Congrats Garen!
